Toasted Oaxaca Old Fashioned
Oaxaca Old Fashioned but make it … fall 😏 I was really in the mood for something toasty and smokey to kick off the first day of the new season, and I’m tellin’ ya, this one HITS.
Ingredients:
¾ oz toasted orange syrup (recipe below)
2 dashes aromatic bitters
1 oz mezcal
1½ oz tequila reposado
orange bitters * to spritz
garnish: brûléed orange slice
Directions:
Add syrup, aromatic bitters, mezcal, and tequila into a cocktail mixing glass. Add ice and stir for approximately thirty seconds (dilution is key to perfecting this cocktail!). Spritz (or rinse a few dashes) a chilled rocks glass with orange bitters. Strain contents of mixing glass into rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with a brûléed orange wedge.
TOASTED ORANGE SYRUP
Ingredients:
zest of one orange (in strips)
½ cup cane sugar
½ cup water
Directions:
Peel an orange and try to remove most of the pith. Add to a dry, small pot and toast on medium low until the peels start to brown along the edges and curl. Add ½ cup of cane sugar, and toast for another minute. Add ½ cup water and allow sugar to dissolve. Let syrup cool completely, strain out the orange peels, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
