Mulled Wine

Not only is mulled wine perfect for a cozy, cold night in, but it will make your home smell absolutely marvelous. When it comes to choosing a red wine to use for this recipe, use something you LOVE to drink! Typically, wines with “jammy” or “fruity” notes will be able to support the flavors that you’ll be adding to the wine, such as a Merlot, Zinfandel, Beaujolais, Grenache, or Syrah.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of red wine of your choosing

  • 3 orange slices

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 7 cloves

  • 2 star anise

  • ¾ oz honey syrup (or agave, maple syrup, etc!)

Directions:

Add all of your ingredients into a medium sauce pot and bring heat to medium low. Be mindful not to boil — you don’t want to cook the alcohol off! You just want to heat the wine throughout and let the flavors of the spices steep. If you have a liquid thermometer handy, ensure the temperature of the wine stays below 140F (60C).

Once wine is warmed, serve in tempered glasses to conserve the temperature of the wine.

To temper a glass, simply pour boiling water into your glass of choice, let it sit for a few minutes, dump the water, and fill with mulled wine. This will also work for any warm beverages!
