Hazelnut Apple Crisp

I felt the slightest crisp in the air and I immediately had to rummage through my mom’s liquor cabinet to make something autumn-inspired. This recipe features a homemade, spiced apple syrup and some fun other flavors (like hazelnut liqueur!).

Ingredients:

  • ½ oz spiced apple syrup (recipe below)

  • 1 ½ oz apple juice

  • ½ oz lemon juice

  • ½ oz hazelnut liqueur

  • 1 ½ oz dry gin

  • 1 egg white

  • garnish: freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

  1. In a cocktail shaker, add spiced apple syrup, apple juice, lemon juice, hazelnut liqueur, gin. Add ice and shake for approximately thirty seconds, until chilled.

  2. Strain out the ice, add the egg white, and shake again.

  3. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a coupe glass.

  4. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Spiced Apple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup cane sugar

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 apple, cut into large pieces

  • 5 whole cloves

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 1 star anise

Directions:

Combine sugar, water, apples, and spices into a medium sauce pan and bring to a simmer. Once sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and let the flavors steep while the syrup cools completely (about 30 minutes to an hour). Once cooled, strain out the solids and transfer syrup into an airtight container.  Store in the refrigerator for about two to three weeks.
